Many of us are wondering how we can maintain an active and healthy lifestyle with recent gym closures and quarantine mandates. It’s not easy to switch up your workout routine, but exercise is especially important during these difficult times. That’s why we’ve put together these ten at-home exercises that will help boost your physical and mental health. You don’t need fancy equipment or a lot of time to complete these simple exercises from the comfort of your own home.
Here are six basic exercises that require no equipment, just a little bit of space.
-
Planks, or side planks
-
Lunges
-
Burpees
-
Squats
-
Push-ups
-
Sit-ups
If you’re looking for a challenge, try these four movements using equipment that can be found around your house.
Rows
This motion is important to reverse some of the effects of sitting throughout the day and to strengthen the muscles of your midback and shoulder blades. Grab an elastic band with it looped around a pole or railing and while keeping your forearms parallel to the floor pull the band back towards you while squeezing your shoulder blades. Don’t have a band? Grab a towel and do an isometric hold where you engage those muscles while pulling on the towel and holding for 15-20 seconds.
Chair Tricep Dips
Chair dips are an easy exercise to complete with something we all have at home. Grab a chair and sit on the edge while holding onto the front of the chair. For a more difficult option, you can extend your legs out straight or you can keep them bent. Once in position, lower your body until your elbows reach 90 degrees and then push back up.
Milk Bottle Russian Twists
Russian twists are a fantastic exercise to work your core. All you need is a bottle filled with any amount of liquid. Sit on the floor, lean back and engage your core. Grab your filled bottle, hold it in the center of your body and rotate your torso to both sides. Try to touch the floor with the bottle to work out your obliques and core.
Wall Sits
Find a wall and place your back flat against it. Slowly start to sit down until your knees are at a 90-degree angle. You should look like you’re sitting in a chair. Hold that position for as long as possible and you will begin to feel the burn!
