The Big Game is here, which means it’s time to gather with friends and family, watch a great matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals, and of course enjoy some delicious Super Bowl snacks.
In honor of American Heart Month, we recently wrote about the importance of heart-healthy habits including the conscious choice to limit the intake of saturated fats and sodium. While we love buffalo wings, nachos, and pizza as much as the next person, we want to shine the light on some healthier alternatives. Here are three “Super” snacks that are as equally delicious as they are healthy to keep us all fit and feeling fine!
Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries: This is a batch of fries you can feel good about.
Sweet potatoes are a versatile vegetable that can be either sweet or savory. Start by cutting the sweet potatoes into small pieces. Pat dry with a paper towel. Mix the small pieces with olive oil and add salt, cumin, cayenne pepper, and black pepper. Place half of the sweet potato fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket for 7 minutes at 380 degrees. Flip and fry for another 7 minutes. Then, repeat for the second half of the sweet potato fries. Transfer all of the cooked fries to the air fryer basket and cook at 400 degrees for 3 to 5 more minutes until all of the fries are crispy. Visit the link here for the full recipe.
Corn and Black Bean Salsa: Grab a chip and get ready to dip!
This is a great all-season dip that’s easy to make as well. Add some avocado oil to a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add corn and cook for three minutes. Stir in salt and cumin and cook for one more minute. Remove to a plate and let cool. You can also skip this step and use canned corn. Combine black beans, tomato, red onion, jalepeno, and garlic in a large bowl with lime juice and salt (with avocado slices optional). Add the corn and cilantro. Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy! Grilled Chicken Sliders: It will be love at first bite.
These miniature sandwiches will be full of flavor with cajun seasoning and adobo sauce. Cut your chicken into 12 small, thin chicken breast “patties.” Season with Cajun seasoning and salt and pepper. Heat a grill pan if you have one or a heavy skillet over medium to medium-high heat. Cook the chicken pieces on the first side for about 3 minutes, then flip them over. Top each with a piece of cheese and cook until the chicken is done, about 3 more minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan. Spread mayonnaise and adobo sauce on whole wheat rolls. Place some lettuce, then chicken pieces on the rolls. For a variation on these rolls with onions, try this recipe.
