Rochester Springtime Activities for Seniors

Now is the perfect time to find some new, fun activities to try out in the warmer weather! Hoping that we’ve seen the last of the snow in upstate New York, we’ve compiled a list of five Rochester springtime activities for Seniors.

  1. Go on a walk outside!

Walking is a great way to increase your activity level, while being able to go at your own pace! Walking regularly has been shown to improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles and joints, improve sleep habits, and help improve your general mood! We are so lucky to have so many great areas for a walk in the Rochester area! Durand Eastman park, Highland Park, and the pathways by Canandaigua Lake are just a few great examples.

2. Start spring cleaning!

Spring cleaning doesn’t always need to be an unwanted task! It can be a great way to get moving, get rid of unwanted clutter, reorganize and make your home a more comfortable place. Starting fresh in a newly cleaned and organized space is a great way to welcome in the new season and get excited for the warm months to come. It’s also a great way to get active and be productive all at once.

3. Get your garden ready!

Early spring is the perfect time to get started on your garden. Gardening requires prep work and lots of maintenance, so it provides a great way to regularly get some physical activity. Gardening has been shown to help with strength, flexibility, reducing stress, and working on your critical thinking skills! If you don’t have your own garden, consider joining a community garden that provides a lot of great social opportunities as well as the support of working in a group! If you are looking to join one in the Rochester area, there are many listed through the Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension website.

4. Try out a new hobby!

Nice weather provides the perfect opportunity to get out and pick up a new hobby! You could try new fitness activities, join a club, or take up photography. Finding a hobby that you’re interested in (especially one that gets you outside) is a great way to stay active, and have fun while you’re doing it! High Falls or the Lamberton Conservatory at Highland Park are great spots to take photos in the area.

5. Sign up for a class!

Speaking of new hobbies, you can always sign up for a class at your local community center too! There’s a ton of options for exercise classes, especially through Lattimore Fitness and the YMCA of Greater Rochester. They have different types of yoga classes, pilates, assisted stretching, and group training classes! If you’re interested in the arts, there are always interesting workshops being held at Flower City Arts Center that might be worth checking out as well.
