Common Football Injuries

Sports can take a large toll on our body. From training season to game day, our bodies are pushed to the limits. This month here at Lattimore Physical Therapy we want to discuss some common football injuries and how physical therapy can help to treat them! For football players, physical therapy is a great alternative to intense surgery that could keep them out of the game for the rest of the season. According to the NCAA, only 7.5% of college football players choose surgery as a treatment option. Read more on how physical therapy can treat common football injuries!

  • Lower Body Injuries: Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) or Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Meniscus tears, Ankle sprains

    • Physical Therapy Treatment 

      • Balance exercises to help strengthen the lower body

      • Hands-on treatment to help the joints from becoming stiff 

      • Exercises to improve range of motion 

  • Shoulder Injuries: Labrum (cartilage bumper surrounding the socket of the shoulder) tear and acromioclavicular joint (ACJ)

    • Physical Therapy Treatment 

      • Exercises to increase range of motion using bands

  • Head Injuries: Concussions

    • Physical Therapy Treatment 

      • Exercises to help with vision, balance the inner ear and overall help to improve brain function

  • Overuse Injuries: Lower back or back pain in general due to overtraining 

    • Physical Therapy Treatment 

      • Icing the sore area and resting it for a period of time

      • Stretching and strengthening exercises to help improve posture to avoid future back pains or recurring pains
