How to Fight a Sedentary Lifestyle

Many of us work some sort of job in which we have to sit for 6 to 8 hours a day, sometimes even longer. Sitting for the majority of our days not only forces us to be inactive but also causes a number of health concerns. Sitting for extended periods of time has been linked to increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels. Even increased risks of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer have been associated with sedentary lifestyles. So here are some things you can do to help yourself at work.

  1. Try a stand-up desk! A stand-up desk is a great alternative to a normal desk because it allows you to stand while working, which helps to combat many of the health concerns that come with sitting all day such as high blood sugar and risk of heart disease. Additionally, a standing desk has been shown to increase productivity, improve mood and energy levels and reduce back pain that many typically suffer from when sitting.

  2. On your lunch break, try taking a walk outside with a coworker or even around the building. This will help to give you a mid-day break from sitting and will also give you the chance to socialize with coworkers. Try to get outside during the warmer weather months.

  3. Try some simple stretches to avoid becoming sore and help loosen up throughout the day. These stretches can include a simple neck stretch, shoulder roll, lower back stretch, or a variety of other stretches to help any other areas that may be holding tension from sitting for a long period of time.

  4. Studies have shown that common health concerns linked to sitting for eight hours a day were decreased for people who were physically active for at least one hour a day. So after sitting all day stop by one of our Lattimore fitness locations that now offer gym memberships, to burn off some of that stored energy and be active for a part of your day.
