It’s that time of year again, the cold months of winter have returned. During winter, it’s important to be aware that the risk for injury is even higher due to the cold temperatures. Here are some tips on how to avoid injury during the cold winter months!
-
Bundle up! Wear extra layers when going outside, heading to the gym or just walking outside. Extra layers will help to keep your muscles and overall body temperature warm. If you are heading to the gym be sure to wear your layers during warm-ups and shed layers as needed!
-
Be sure to stretch before any type of exercise, whether it be running, weight lifting, cycling or any type of exercise. Stretching before helps to loosen up muscles that may be stiff from the cold weather. By loosening up these muscles you can help to prevent pulls, tears or strains in your muscles.
-
Massage therapy is another great way to avoid injury during the winter months. Some of the benefits of massage therapy are reducing muscle soreness, improving flexibility which can help overall performance, can help to prevent injuries and even reduce recovery time.
-
Be sure to stay active during the cold months, even if it’s as simple as a walk around the neighborhood or a workout at your local Lattimore Fitness location! Don’t let the cold keep you from being active!
-
Always keep an eye out for ice! One minor slip can lead to tears in muscles, tendons and/or ligaments as well as other various injuries from impact should you fall to the ground.
